Louise Nevelson - Russian/American Sculptor
Louise Nevelson - Born Louise Berliawsky 1899-1988 - was an American Sculptor born in Russia. She is called the “most celebrated female sculptor in the history of modernism.” She grew up in Rockland, Main were her father owned a lumber yard. It is said that is were her passion for wood pieces and sculpting developed.
She would have fit right in with the “Our Green Earth” event. She would go dumpster diving for wood and wood objects. She used found wood crates, spindles and other wooden objects for her sculptures. Nevelson started out small but her sculptures grew into huge wall and outdoor pieces.
