“Our Green Earth”

p1290058.GIFOur first annual Our Green Earth couldn’t have had a better day for the event. The sun was shinning and we had a cool breeze, sometimes to breezy.

Kids enjoyed the art activities and building an environmental sculpture — with local artist Cheryl McCardle — out of wood, paint, water bottles and other found objects. Melinda Yeargan, from Creation Station, was there as well creating coffee filter butterflies

By the way, water bottles don’t break down in our landfills, so please recycle the water bottles and all plastics.

Penny Evans, Clayton Artist and member of the JOCO Artist Guild, worked on a painting and Kirk Adams handed out Eva Gardner Fans — used to cool you, not actual Eva Fans — and information about the Eva Gardner film festival. The Clayton Visual Arts group and the Johnston County Arts Council was there as well handing out information. Parents browsed through the plants that were for sale and others bid on the Decorated Recycle Bins. We are happy to say that all bins found good homes.

Johnston County Master Gardener Shawn Banks, Shawn.Banks@ncsu.com — Johnston County Cooperative Extension — answered questions about plants, drought and gardening. Susan Woodward, Susan.Woodard@nc.nacdnet.net, from the Johnston County Soil and Water District sold water barrels, answered questions about recycling, what should be recycled and even gave a quiz. I think I failed it. ;o)

And Beanca and her friends from the American Wild Life Refuge was a hit with the kids and adults a like. We were up close, but not too personal, with Beanca and she was a beautiful bird very large bird. Beanca is a Steppe Eagle from Russia and was rescued by the founder of the American Wild Life Refuge. Beanca is 41 years old and will probably live to be 100, but do to her injuries she is not able to be released into the wild.

Next year we hope to have a bigger and better event. So, mark you calendar for April 18, 2009 and we will see you at the next “Our Green Earth - Paint it Green and Keep it Clean.”

To see a video from the event visit The Smithfield Herald at http://www.theherald-nc.com/multimedia/story/7998.html
Thank you to all who attended, to our presenters and sponsors. You are all very much appreciated.
